«Um fim feliz»

Numa manhã de céu nublado a Agência ECCLESIA foi conhecer uma casa destinada às irmãs Salesianas mais idosas, religiosas que toda a vida se dedicaram à juventude e sua educação. Em Manique de Baixo, no Patriarcado de Lisboa, surge a casa de São José, um edifício branco, rodeado de jardim, inaugurado há quatro anos, onde nos espera a responsável pela casa, a irmã Rosa Teixeira.

“Esta casa é para as irmãs que trabalharam muito, deram a sua vida nas diferentes presenças salesianas em Portugal e podem estar tranquilas, serenas, podem descansar, e rezar, passear e prepararem-se para um fim feliz nos anos de vida que Deus lhes quiser dar”, explica a responsável.

A irmã Rosita, como assim carinhosamente é tratada e conhecida na congregação, conta à Agência ECCLESIA que aquela casa está totalmente equipada para os cuidados das mais idosas, contando com uma equipa de cozinheiras, uma enfermeira e várias colaboradoras que tratam e cuidam as religiosas, dedicando-se de “maneira total”.

É uma comunidade de 28 irmãs, onde três estão acamadas, e por entre corredores espaçosos e iluminados fomos ao encontro das religiosas que estavam na sala de convívio, onde a responsável da casa se apressa a apresentar as religiosas.

“Esta é de Arouca, aquela de Vila Nova de Gaia, outra de Macedo de Cavaleiros, todas na ‘casa feliz’ dos 90 anos… Depois temos mais irmãs de Vila Real, do Cacém… aqui cada uma faz o que pode: renda, crochet, jogos, outras rezam porque já não conseguem fazer mais nada”, explica a Filha de Maria Auxiliadora, enquanto vai cumprimentando as irmãs ali sentadas, algumas nem reconhecem o espaço onde estão.

A irmã Rosita, de 74 anos, conta ainda que há duas irmãs que, por dia, vão para a capela “rezar pelas intenções da Igreja, dos pobres, da paz no Mundo e pelas vocações salesianas”, outras há que dão uma ajuda na cozinha “a descascar batatas, cebolas e fruta”.

A religiosa conta que a congregação nunca tinha vivido uma “experiência de um prolongamento de vida tão grande”, por isso a necessidade de uma casa como esta.

“Por um lado era bom trazê-las das comunidades onde as exigências eram grandes e elas já não podiam dar, por outro lado achámos que era um dever de justiça, por gratidão, a estas irmãs que deram tudo e se foram gastando…”, refere.

A responsável pela casa de São José “nunca pensou” estar ali mas como não sabe ‘dizer que não’ “colocou-se ao serviço das irmãs” e sente que a valorização dos idosos é um desafio à sociedade.

“Este acompanhamento é um desafio à nossa sociedade para olhar os idosos com gratidão e olhar para alguém que devemos tratar com carinho e amanhã, quando precisarmos de alguém que nos trate com amor e carinho, será que vamos encontrar isso?”, questiona a irmã com o olhar apreensivo e mãos cerradas.

«Envelhecemos no ativo»

No Alentejo profundo, a poucos quilómetros da fronteira com Espanha, na localidade de Barbacena, na diocese de Évora, situa-se o Centro Social Nossa Senhora do Paço, com as valências de crianças, creche e jardim-de-infância, idosos, lar, centro de dia e apoio domiciliário, das irmãs Concepcionistas ao Serviço dos Pobres.

A congregação tem vindo a olhar esta realidade do envelhecimento, tendo apostado nesta instituição e, para as religiosas mais velhas, em Fátima há outra comunidade onde são acolhidas.

“Temos um olhar atento e especial aos mais idosos porque a idade das irmãs vai aumentando a cada dia, a média etária é bastante alta, como é o caso da minha comunidade, em que sou a mais nova e as outras irmãs têm mais de 70 anos.

Não penso muito nisso, mas vejo, e é uma realidade, mas não me dou conta”, explica à Ecclesia a irmã Goreti Pedrosa.

Há cerca de 15 anos a religiosa esteve nessa comunidade de Fátima, onde vivem as irmãs mais idosas, um “desafio” que acolheu de braços abertos.

“Estive lá há uns 15 anos e tive esse desafio de integrar as irmãs no lar, era uma mentalidade diferente e as irmãs estavam habituadas a serem cuidadas por irmãs… Aos poucos fomos introduzindo que os colaboradores ajudassem no seu cuidado, foi uma experiência bonita mas difícil”, recorda.

Na congregação o desejo é que as religiosas mais velhas possam permanecer nas casas da comunidade “mas nem sempre há condições quando os problemas de saúde se agravam”, confessa a religiosa.

“A situação de dependência é algo novo para todas as pessoas e quando não é gradual tem de haver uma aprendizagem, quer quem ajuda, quer quem está a ser ajudado”, esclarece.

A irmã Goreti Pedrosa vive agora a realidade de Barbacena, um meio pequeno e envelhecido, onde houve a necessidade de formação para os colaboradores quebrarem preconceitos e serem mais humanos.

“Pedimos a formação ‘Humanitude’ que destaca a relação positiva, o tirar o melhor do idoso, uma mais valia para a relação com os idosos.

Para mim, trata-se de uma chamada de atenção, para os momentos, em que a atenção está centrada no utente, com cordialidade, com respeito e dedicação, pôr a render tudo o que o idoso ainda é capaz”, destaca a religiosa.

«Sou muito feliz aqui»

Esta é a frase que mais se ouviu na visita que a Agência ECCLESIA fez a Torres Novas, onde as Irmãs de São José de Cluny têm uma casa onde acolhem, acompanham e cuidam das religiosas mais idosas.

“Sou muito feliz na congregação de São José de Cluny onde o Senhor me trouxe aos 20 anos, e tenho 102 anos, e sou muito feliz por consagrar toda a minha vida ao serviço de Deus e da sua santa vontade, que é o principal”, diz irmã Ana José, em declarações à Agência ECCLESIA.

A alegria é partilhada pelas restantes irmãs idosas desta Comunidade residente em Torres Novas, na diocese de Santarém, onde se sentem em família.

“Nós somos uma família, e como tal cuidamos das nossas irmãs idosas com todo o carinho e atenção. Mas nem todas as casas estão preparadas, porque têm escadas, por exemplo, então organizamos aqui e em Braga, e também algumas estão em Fátima”, explica a superiora provincial, irmã Fátima Machado.

A religiosa de 102 anos, e com mais de 90 anos são 19 irmãs “muito felizes” que ali vivem e continuam em missão.  

“Estão felizes, muito boas e santas, que rezam por nós e pela província, irmãs felizes, e são grande suporte para a província e para a congregação porque a força principal é a oração.

Eu, quando preciso mais, peço que rezem por esta ou aquela intenção, por este problema, e assim elas sentem-se em missão”, conta a superiora provincial.

Os espaços, os horários, os ritmos foram sendo adaptados para conforto das irmãs mais idosas. Também a superiora da comunidade de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, em Torres Novas, a irmã Almerinda Alves, aponta aqui a sabedoria e a santidade destas religiosas mais velhas.

“Esta sabedoria e sentir esta santidade à nossa volta, cada irmã é um tesouro ao ver a vida que estas irmãs tiveram na sua vida ativa e agora na vida da missão, pelas intenções da missão e do Mundo.

Por exemplo, na hora da refeição, são essas irmãs mais velhas que nos dão as notícias que ouvem na rádio ou televisão e para nós é uma alegria muito grande; e a mim é uma grande oportunidade de me darem a conhecer o que está a acontecer no momento atual”, refere a responsável da casa.

Ao lado está uma Instituição que acolhe crianças, desde um ano de idade,  e a irmã Almerinda destaca a proximidade entre gerações que ali se vive e que transforma a casa num acolhimento de portas abertas.

“É a complementaridade na alegria, na alegria de nos darmos, alegria de ter portas abertas a toda a gente”, destaca.

A alegria, a sabedoria e o cuidado que envolvem esta comunidade das irmãs de s. José de Cluny, em Torres Novas, uma casa que se abre a grupos para retiros, voluntariado e este ano com a novidade das portas abertas “oito dias no verão”, destinada a jovens que queiram conhecer e ver o que as irmãs fazem.

Entre armazéns vive uma comunidade idosa de religiosas

Em Sacavém, nos arredores de Lisboa, entre vários armazéns situa-se a casa das Irmãs Franciscanas Missionárias de Nossa Senhora, uma antiga quinta agrícola onde agora vivem as irmãs mais idosas da congregação e, a par disso, nasceu o Centro Social Nossa Senhora das Graças, um lar residencial que apoiam.

“Nós estávamos muito voltadas para a saúde e educação mas agora para a terceira idade, porque as necessidades vão mudando e hoje é um ramo que necessita muito”, explica à Agência Ecclesia a superiora da casa, a irmã Conceição Carvalho.

A casa, originalmente para dar apoio à pastoral e acolher irmãs de passagem, pela proximidade do aeroporto, foi sendo adaptada para as necessidades das religiosas mais idosas.

“Hoje a congregação está bastante envelhecida, há falta de vocações e muitas irmãs de idade… Aqui somos 20 irmãs, cinco totalmente acamadas, todas acima dos 75 anos, apenas uma na casa dos 50 e duas nos 60 anos”, conta a responsável.

Os dias desta comunidade de religiosas iniciam com a visita das colaboradoras que prestam auxílio às irmãs acamadas e depois as tarefas da casa são divididas por todas, “conforme podem”.

A irmã Conceição Carvalho destaca um grupo de irmãs que, apesar da idade avançada, se vão mantendo muito ativas.

“Temos um grupo de irmãs com mais de 90 anos, uma delas, por exemplo, ainda nos coze a broa quando é necessário e nos aniversários faz questão de ser ela a fazer o bolo de aniversário.

Também na valência do lar residencial as irmãs passam, conversam com os idosos, e são uma presença no lar, dão-lhes atenção e os utentes gostam”, confessa.

“As irmãs cuidam das outras irmãs, só a higiene é feita pelos cuidados do lar”, explica a superiora da casa que sublinha esta máxima de “ajuda fraterna” entre todas, onde se “sentem família”, “irmãs que acompanham, ajudam na alimentação e oração”.

“Temos a preocupação de manter as irmãs nas comunidades onde envelheceram, na proximidade também das famílias, e procuramos adaptar a casa às necessidades que vamos sentido, e nós somos a família delas”, afirma.

Esta casa, lado a lado a funcionar o lar residencial, vai ter uma nova valência, para dar respostas a muitos pedidos da população de Sacavém: “vai começar a funcionar também o centro de dia”.

Quando se fala de envelhecimento com a irmã Conceição Carvalho, a memória traz muitos dos ensinamentos que teve como enfermeira, e pensa muitas vezes no seu próprio futuro, ela já com mais de 70 anos.

“Vendo o que há para trás, de irmãs mais novas, que é muito pouco, penso se realmente vamos ter quem nos cuide como nós cuidamos, vai ser difícil … talvez vamos para lares laicos e não nas comunidades… bem talvez o meu caso ainda não, mas das mais novas, sim”, conclui.

A manhã estava fresca quando a Agência ECCLESIA foi até ao Linhó, em Sintra, numa visita à casa da Comunidade de Nossa Senhora da Conceição onde vivem 29 irmãs Doroteias mais idosas.

À entrada esperava-nos a irmã Purificação Rodrigues, responsável da casa, e a irmã Maria Leonor, seu “braço direito”. Convidam-nos à visita, entrámos na Igreja, e percorremos depois os corredores, compridos e luminosos, que nos levam à sala de convívio onde as irmãs estão atentas à eucaristia diária a passar na televisão.

As duas religiosas cumprimentam as irmãs, dão a conhecer as suas origens e trabalhos por onde passaram… A irmã Maria Ludovina Ribeiro, por exemplo, sempre trabalhou no Alentejo e apressou-se a mostrar os seus dotes vocais, despertando a boa disposição das irmãs, e todas cantaram.

Já a irmã Conceição, quase a fazer 90 anos, sentada num cadeirão no fundo da sala, contou à Agência ECCLESIA que esteve 40 anos em Angola, e agora gosta de ali estar.

“Agora estou na ‘sala de espera’, que acho simpaticíssima, gosto de aqui estar, de ver a serra e sou bem tratada por todos”, destaca.

No lado oposto da sala encontra-se a irmã Maria Raquel sentada em frente ao computador. Tem 95 anos e, com movimentos lentos do rato, joga paciências… Na hora do terço, destrava a cadeira de rodas, vira-se e reza em comunidade.

Hábitos desta comunidade idosa das irmãs Doroteias, em Sintra, que, com a ajuda de uma enfermeira e várias colaboradoras, é acompanhada e cuidada.

“Pensar nestas irmãs que são bem tratadas e que temos a obrigação de tratar e acompanhar, depois faz-me tristeza ter conhecimento de idosos que não são bem acolhidos , por vários motivos… se eu tivesse uma casa muito grande acolhia todos”, desabafa a irmã Purificação.

São várias as casas que acolhem as irmãs de 3ª idade da congregação, no Linhó é a comunidade maior, e aquela casa guarda muitas histórias desde que abriu para acolher as novas vocações. Atualmente foi adaptada para as necessidades desta irmãs mais idosas, onde, as que podem, têm ainda tarefas e responsabilidades.

“A irmã Maria, que dá catequese e acolhe os grupos de escuteiros, a irmã Maria Boavida, que foi enfermeira e agora, não podendo, reza por todos e pela província, a irmã Mateus que dá uma ajuda na cozinha… cada uma com uma pequena tarefa para que todas se sintam úteis e ativas, neste trabalho que se quer de equipa”, explicava a irmã Purificação.

Nesta comunidade há algumas religiosas acamadas que vão recebendo a visita das irmãs que rezam com elas, fazem companhia e até cantam para elas.

Com 88 anos a irmã Maria Leonor, além de ser o ‘braço direito’ da responsável da casa, tem também uma função especial.

“Sou um bocadinho o faz tudo, faço o diário da casa, registo os acontecimentos extra programa, ajudo a Purificação no que ela precisa e estou no bar… gosto de café e vendo café, acolho as pessoas, ouço os seus problemas, é um segundo confessionário… As pessoas sentem-se à vontade, às vezes são histórias bonitas, outras vezes dramáticas, dos grupos que aqui passam; é quase a minha missão principal, é pena ser só aos fins-de-semana”, lamenta.

O acolhimento aos grupos é outra das funções daquela casa, que quer ser “um lugar privilegiado de crescimento na fé” dentro da espiritualidade inaciana e esta realidade traz também muitas experiências e alegria às irmãs mais velhas.

“Quando temos cá grupos de jovens convido sempre a virem visitar as irmãs, elas gostam, às vezes espreitam os grupos da janela e é uma alegria esta interação entre gerações”, conclui a irmã Purificação.
