Este é o título de uma publicação que deu à luz um possível itinerário que Santo António terá feito quando saiu de Lisboa para ir em missão. O viajante Gonçalo Cadilhe percorreu esta viagem medieval e através da escrita revela paisagens, lugares e sensações que trazem outra perspetiva deste santo popular.
Muitas são as biografias que existem sobre Santo António e que Gonçalo Cadilhe leu e investigou pois não queria relatar os milagres nem as tradicionais lendas associadas ao santo. O escritor quis pegar no mapa e ir desenhando a sua progressão da viagem que “corresponde quase sempre à cronologia ascendente da existência de Santo António”, como se lê na sua introdução. A Ecclesia conversou com Gonçalo Cadilhe que foi abrindo o “baú das histórias” desta viagem medieval.
“No seguimento do que venho a desenvolver como escritor viajante surgiu esta publicação e esta figura da História de Portugal merecia que eu percorresse o seu percurso.
Santo António foi um grande viajante, talvez um dos mais extraordinários, o primeiro e é preciso perceber esta viagem em que não havia estradas, numa época em que era extremamente difícil viajar ele foi um grande viajante”, referiu Gonçalo Cadilhe à Ecclesia.
Gonçalo Cadilhe, natural da Figueira da Foz, explicou que a faceta de viajante deste santo “não é posta na ribalta, nem causa admiração” e por isso lhe quis dar relevo neste livro.

Há 30 anos a seguir esta vida de escritor viajante, jornalista em viagem, Gonçalo Cadilhe põe em comparação a sua viagem com “a viagem de um missionário do início do século XIII”.
Antes de surgirem letras e palavras nas páginas da obra surge um mapa com o percurso percorrido, um pedido do autor por considerar importante que o leitor tivesse a noção da viagem.
“A viagem de Santo António mostra bem a qualidade deste viajante. Ele parte de Coimbra, porque se sabe que ele foi de Lisboa para lá pelos 14 ou 15 anos, junta-se aos franciscanos e é a partir daí que abandona a vida de claustro e biblioteca e vive pela estrada.
Marrocos, Tunísia, atravessou para Palermo, na Sicília, sobe até Assis, onde conhece São Francisco, recebe encargos pelo norte de Itália e sul de França, terá atravessado os Alpes, e depois segue para Toulouse; regressa a Itália com a morte de São Francisco, e depois continua por várias províncias de Itália até Pádua, onde acaba por falecer”, resume o autor.

Este viajante do nosso tempo passou “cerca três meses” nesta viagem medieval mas depois foi a vários locais outras vezes para se documentar e entrevistar pessoas.
Partiu de Coimbra, onde Santo António terá vivido e se tornado franciscano, e seguiu para Lisboa, onde Gonçalo Cadilhe encontrou o cardeal patriarca de Lisboa.
“Estive no museu de Santo António, um ponto óbvio de pesquisa, porque precisava de conhecer quer a vida e o tempo de Santo António, pois o livro é uma análise histórica e pesquisa de todas as possibilidades reais da vida dele.
E, São Vicente de Fora, antigo mosteiro onde terá vivido Santo António como agostiniano, tive a sorte de poder ter o depoimento de D. Manuel Clemente e sabemos que é um grande ‘aficionado’ do santo e apanhei um resumo, umas luzes que me davam todo o panorama geral para depois partir para os pormenores”, explicou.
Na sua obra Gonçalo Cadilhe traz a realidade de Lisboa naquela época, tinha sido conquistada aos mouros há pouco tempo e o autor afirma que “Santo António terá sempre vivido entre mouros e cristãos”.
“Na altura ainda de seu nome Fernando Martins, que vinha de uma família de classe média-alta, certamente teria contactos com a comunidade muçulmana e teria conhecimentos da língua árabe”.

Outro dos locais de destaque é a Basílica de Assis onde o autor confessa se ter emocionado com um quadro onde figura este santo popular, um quadro de Giotto, que viria a ser “um dos maiores revolucionários da arte”.
“Tocou-me porque Giotto tem essa capacidade de colocar pela primeira vez a emoção, a carga humana, num quadro. A roupa mexe-se, as crianças choram… e neste caso Santo António estava ali, estava o espírito do caminho, a sacralidade do lugar, foi muito forte…”, confessou.

“Mais do que a gruta, que entretanto foi tapada pela fachada de uma capela, não há dimensão da beleza, da rocha, dos sentimentos românticos no indivíduo em confronto consigo próprio mas temos um lugar isolado, não se ouve atividade humana.

Outro lugar que se tornou predileto para o escritor foi La Verna, um santuário e mosteiro, a 1100m de altitude, que acolhe peregrinos e lhes dá uma experiência de “silêncio e serenidade” onde é possível se “ausentar do mundo”, como o autor explica na obra.
La Verna foi um dos lugares prediletos de São Francisco de Assis e decerto também visitado por Santo António, um ermo solitário e assombrado que deixa passar o lado mais “espiritual do eremita medieval”.

Segundo o autor o livro deixa ainda um “paradoxo por resolver”, as duas pulsões de Santo António, o lado de uma “solidão recatada” e a relação que tinha com as “grandes massas das grandes cidades”.
Gonçalo Cadilhe fez a sua viagem medieval até Pádua, cidade onde está sepultado Santo António, o santo que ele considera como “principal construtor do movimento franciscano”.
