Bento XVI comunica a sua decisão de resignar ao pontificado a partir do dia 28 de fevereiro, abrindo assim caminho para a eleição de um novo Papa. Depois de ouvir o anúncio da renúncia, o cardeal Sodano disse que a notícia era como um “trovão num céu sereno”. E um relâmpago atingia, nessa tarde, cúpula da Basílica de São Pedro.

Quantos Papas renunciaram na História?
Antes de 2013, o último caso de renúncia, situação pouco comum na história da Igreja, tinha sido o do Papa Gregório XII, em 1415.
Bento XVI emérito admitia a possibilidade de renunciar, num livro publicado em 2010, frisando que esse é um direito do Papa e, nalguns casos, mesmo um “dever”.
Nos últimos 600 anos, no entanto, nenhum Papa tinha resignado; nos mais de 260 sucessores de São Pedro como bispo de Roma houve pelo menos quatro que deixaram o cargo. Os casos mais famosos são os de Gregório XII e São Celestino V, em 1294.
Em abril de 2009, Bento XVI realizara um gesto simbólico ao depositar o pálio – insígnia pessoal e de autoridade – junto da porta santa da Basílica de de Collemaggio, de L’Aquila (Itália), que lhe fora imposto no dia do início de pontificado, em cima do relicário com os restos mortais do Papa Celestino V (1215-1296), pontífice que governou a Igreja Católica apenas durante uns meses, em 1294, antes de apresentar a sua renúncia.
Segundo o jornal do Vaticano, ‘L’Osservatore Romano’, “a reconstrução histórica dos casos em que um pontificado foi interrompido antes da morte do Papa conduz a pouquíssimas figuras e em nenhum caso a uma situação como a que se verificou com a decisão de Bento XVI”.
O Código de Direito Canónico prevê a possibilidade jurídica de renúncia por parte do Papa e esta renúncia não precisa de ser aceite por ninguém para ter validade, como indica o Cânone 332.
O que se exige é que o Papa renuncie livremente e que manifeste a sua decisão de modo claro e público.

Gravidade e inovação
“Bem consciente da gravidade deste ato, com plena liberdade, declaro que renuncio ao ministério de bispo de Roma, sucessor de São Pedro, que me foi confiado pela mão dos cardeais em 19 de abril de 2005, pelo que, a partir de 28 de fevereiro de 2013, às 20h00, a sede de Roma, a sede de São Pedro, ficará vacante e deverá ser convocado, por aqueles a quem tal compete, o Conclave para a eleição do novo Sumo Pontífice”, declarou Bento XVI.
Em encontros posteriores, Bento XVI afirmaria que a sua decisão de renúncia ao pontificado implicou uma “inovação” e disse que a mesma foi para o “bem da Igreja”. “Dei este passo com plena consciência da sua gravidade e inovação, mas com uma profunda serenidade de espírito”, explicou, perante mais de 150 mil pessoas reunidas na Praça de São Pedro, para a última audiência geral do pontificado.

Renúncia ao pontificado
Caríssimos Irmãos,
convoquei-vos para este Consistório não só por causa das três canonizações, mas também para vos comunicar uma decisão de grande importância para a vida da Igreja. Depois de ter examinado repetidamente a minha consciência diante de Deus, cheguei à certeza de que as minhas forças, devido à idade avançada, já não são idóneas para exercer adequadamente o ministério petrino. Estou bem consciente de que este ministério, pela sua essência espiritual, deve ser cumprido não só com as obras e com as palavras, mas também e igualmente sofrendo e rezando. Todavia, no mundo de hoje, sujeito a rápidas mudanças e agitado por questões de grande relevância para a vida da fé, para governar a barca de São Pedro e anunciar o Evangelho, é necessário também o vigor quer do corpo quer do espírito; vigor este, que, nos últimos meses, foi diminuindo de tal modo em mim que tenho de reconhecer a minha incapacidade para administrar bem o ministério que me foi confiado. Por isso, bem consciente da gravidade deste ato, com plena liberdade, declaro que renuncio ao ministério de Bispo de Roma, Sucessor de São Pedro, que me foi confiado pela mão dos Cardeais em 19 de abril de 2005, pelo que, a partir de 28 de fevereiro de 2013, às 20h00, a sede de Roma, a sede de São Pedro, ficará vacante e deverá ser convocado, por aqueles a quem tal compete, o Conclave para a eleição do novo Sumo Pontífice.
