O arcebispo de Nova Iorque, Timothy M. Dolan, foi eleito como novo presidente da Conferência Episcopal dos Estados Unidos da América (USCCB), sucedendo no cargo ao Cardeal Francis E. George, de Chicago.<\/p>\n
O novo presidente manifestou-se “surpreendido” com a eleição, que fugiu à tradição de promover um vice-presidente para a liderança do organismo episcopal.<\/p>\n
D. Timothy M. Dolan, de 60 anos, chegou à arquidiocese de Nova Iorque em 2009, vindo de Milwaukee. Assume a presidência da USCCB no final da reunião dos bispos, a 18 de Novembro.<\/p>\n
A eleição do arcebispo de Nova Iorque deu-se numa terceira volta, batendo o actual vice-presidente, D. Gerald F. Kicanas, de Tucson (Arizona), por 17 votos (128-111).<\/p>\n
D. Timothy Michael Dolan nasceu a 6 de Fevereiro de 1950 em Saint Louis (Missouri). Licenciado em filosofia, foi enviado para Roma em 1972 e ordenado sacerdote em 1976, pela arquidiocese de Saint Louis.<\/p>\n
Licenciou-se em História Eclesiástica pela Universidade Católica de Washington (1979-1983) e colaborou na Nunciatura Apostólica em Washington (1987-1992). Entre 1994 e 2001 desempenhou o cargo de reitor do Colégio Pontifício da América do Norte, em Roma.<\/p>\n
Em 2001 foi nomeado Bispo auxiliar de Saint Louis, tendo sido ordenado Bispo a 15 de Agosto desse mesmo ano. Em 2002 foi nomeado arcebispo de Milwaukee, cargo que ocupou até Fevereiro de 2009, quando Bento XVI o nomeou como novo arcebispo de Nova Iorque.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
