Ao abordar o caso espec\u00edfico de um preso norte-americano, Joseph Lave, condenado \u00e0 pena capital no Texas, o Cardeal Martino pediu que lhe seja &#8220;poupada a vida ou, pelo menos, adiada a execu\u00e7\u00e3o, para uma revis\u00e3o do caso&#8221;.  Segundo este respons\u00e1vel, a pena de morte &#8220;empobrece a sociedade que a legitima e pratica, n\u00e3o deixando possibilidade de reabilita\u00e7\u00e3o para os condenados&#8221;.
