O Cardeal Joseph Ratzinger escolheu o nome de Bento XVI para o seu pontificado. Ao longo da hist\u00f3ria da Igreja, outros quinze o fizeram: o primeiro, S\u00e3o Bento I, em 575 e Bento XV em 1914. Bento XV foi considerado um Papa conciliador que governou a Igreja Cat\u00f3lica durante a I Guerra Mundial, at\u00e9 1922, e destacou-se pela sua abertura mission\u00e1ria, sobretudo na rela\u00e7\u00e3o com as Igrejas do Oriente. Ap\u00f3s o armist\u00edcio de 1918, Bento XV dedicou-se \u00e0 reforma administrativa da Igreja, com o intuito de a adaptar ao novo sistema internacional emergente. O nome Bento \u00e9 ainda o do padroeiro da Europa, S\u00e3o Bento, fundador dos Beneditinos, que fez face \u00e0 descristianiza\u00e7\u00e3o do Velho Continente. Os outros Papas com o nome Bento governaram a Igreja nos seguintes per\u00edodos: Bento II (684-685); Bento III (855-858), Bento IV (900-903); Bento V (964 966); Bento VI (973-974); Bento VII (974-983); Bento VIII (1012-1024). Bento X \u00e9 considerado um anti-Papa (1058-1060); Bento XI (1303-1304); Bento XII (1335-1342); Bento XIII (1724-1730) e Bento XIV (1740-1758). Bento IX \u00e9 um caso especial, dado que esteve \u00e0 frente da Igreja por tr\u00eas vezes.
